20 Iconic Hotels Worth Building an Entire Trip Around

There are hotels you book because you're going somewhere. And then there are hotels that make you choose the destination in the first place.

These are the latter.

I'm talking about the places that have lived on your saved list for years. The hotel you saw in a magazine and never forgot. The desert camp that takes some effort to reach, but that's precisely the point. The palace that makes you wonder if you could plan an entire vacation around checking in.

And in many cases, you absolutely should.

My definition of a bucket-list hotel isn't simply somewhere expensive, famous or photogenic. It needs to offer a true sense of place and an experience that's difficult to replicate anywhere else.

Most importantly, it needs to be worth the journey.

From the deserts of Namibia and beaches of Mozambique to Lake Como, Finnish Lapland and the palaces of Rajasthan, here are 20 hotels around the world I'd happily build an entire trip around.

1. Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge | Vancouver Island, Canada

There is remote, and then there is Clayoquot.

Set on 600 acres of wilderness on Vancouver Island, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge has just 25 canvas safari tents tucked between old-growth rainforest, mountains and the waters of Clayoquot Sound.

This is the kind of place where the journey in immediately changes the pace of the trip. Days revolve around wildlife, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, kayaking and exploring some of Canada's most spectacular wilderness before returning to a decidedly luxurious version of camp.

Think grown-up summer camp, if summer camp included incredible food, cedar hot tubs and a wilderness playground populated by black bears, whales, otters, eagles and sea lions.

Why I'd build a trip around it: It's an adventure lodge that makes getting away from everything feel like the ultimate luxury.

2. Kisawa Sanctuary | Benguerra Island, Mozambique

If your idea of an island escape involves disappearing rather than being entertained, put Benguerra Island on your radar.

Kisawa Sanctuary occupies a remarkable 300-hectare stretch of forest, beach and sand dunes on an island off the coast of Mozambique. There are only eight residences, each with its own beachfront, pool and dedicated service team.

The resort intentionally blends into its surroundings rather than competing with them. That sense of space is the luxury here.

Mozambique also makes this especially interesting. You can pair Kisawa with safari for an incredible bush-and-beach itinerary, but the island is extraordinary enough to warrant the journey on its own.

3. Wolwedans Dune Camp | NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia

There are few landscapes that make you feel as wonderfully insignificant as Namibia.

Wolwedans sits deep within the NamibRand Nature Reserve, surrounded by enormous skies, mountains and seemingly endless desert. Its Dune Camp sits on the edge of a 250-meter-high dune with panoramic views across the reserve.

You don't come here for a packed itinerary. You come to experience space.

Explore the dunes, watch the desert change color throughout the day, drift above the landscape by hot-air balloon, look up at some extraordinary night skies and remember what actual silence sounds like.

4. Longitude 131° | Uluṟu, Australia

Imagine waking up, opening your eyes and seeing Uluṟu from bed.

The Red Centre is already a destination that deserves more than a quick stop, but staying here changes the experience. Uluṟu becomes part of your day from sunrise through sunset rather than something you drive out to see.

5. Explora Patagonia | Torres del Paine, Chile

Patagonia isn't somewhere you casually pop into. Getting there is part of the adventure, and that's exactly why your hotel matters.

Explora Patagonia sits within Torres del Paine National Park overlooking Lake Pehoé and the Paine Massif, putting one of South America's most spectacular landscapes right outside your door.

The point isn't simply having a beautiful room. It's having a base from which to hike, ride and explore Patagonia with experts before coming home to somewhere spectacular.

6. Cuixmala | Costalegre, Mexico

Mexico has no shortage of fabulous resorts. Cuixmala is something else entirely.

The architecture alone is extraordinary, particularly the iconic domed Casa Cuixmala overlooking the Pacific. But then there are wild beaches, lagoons, jungle and, rather unexpectedly, zebras.

It feels less like checking into a resort and more like being given the keys to someone's wildly imaginative private world.

Why I'd build a trip around it: Because there is nowhere else in Mexico quite like it.

7. NIHI Sumba | Sumba, Indonesia

Bali may get the attention, but keep going.

NIHI sits on the Indonesian island of Sumba, where rugged landscapes, Sumbanese culture and miles of coastline create a completely different experience.

Its horses have become almost as famous as the resort itself. Guests can ride Sumbanese horses along Nihiwatu Beach and even take them into the Indian Ocean.

But NIHI isn't memorable because of one Instagram-famous experience. The magic is the combination of remoteness, adventure, culture, surfing, enormous villas and that feeling that you've reached somewhere very far from ordinary life.

8. Soneva Jani | Maldives

There are hundreds of beautiful resorts in the Maldives, so if I'm going to call one a bucket-list stay, it needs to bring something extra.

Soneva Jani does.

Its overwater villas have become icons in their own right, with enormous indoor-outdoor spaces, private pools and, in some villas, retractable roofs above the bed and waterslides leading straight into the lagoon.

Yes, a waterslide.

It's playful, indulgent and completely over the top without losing the barefoot ease that makes the Maldives so appealing.

Why I'd build a trip around it: If you're going to do the overwater-villa fantasy once, really do it.

9. Badrutt's Palace | St. Moritz, Switzerland

Some hotels don't simply occupy a destination. They helped create its mythology.

Badrutt's Palace has been part of St. Moritz since the 19th century and remains synonymous with glamorous Alpine travel.

Come winter, this is fur coats, champagne, skiing, frozen lakes and old-school European glamour, especially for The ICE St. Moritz. Summer brings an entirely different personality, with hiking, lakes and the Engadin Valley stretching beyond the hotel's unmistakable tower.

Trends come and go. Badrutt's is Badrutt's.

Why I'd build a trip around it: Because sometimes you want the legend.

10. Passalacqua | Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como has plenty of famous hotels. Passalacqua feels like you've somehow been invited to live there.

The 18th-century villa in Moltrasio is surrounded by terraced gardens cascading toward the lake, with rooms filled with antiques, textiles and wonderfully unapologetic Italian maximalism.

This isn't a hotel I'd use simply as somewhere to sleep while racing around Lake Como checking things off a list.

Stay put. Have a long lunch. Swim. Wander through the gardens. Take the boat out. Have an Aperol Spritz. Repeat.

Why I'd build a trip around it: For the fantasy of Italian villeggiatura, preferably enjoyed slowly.

11. Royal Mansour Marrakech | Marrakech, Morocco

There are no traditional hotel rooms at Royal Mansour Marrakech.

Instead, guests disappear behind the doors of 53 individual riads scattered through the property's own medina. Each unfolds across multiple floors with exquisite Moroccan craftsmanship, private outdoor space and the feeling that you've been given your own little residence in Marrakech.

Then there are the gardens, restaurants and an extraordinary spa, all hidden behind the walls of this remarkable palace.

Royal Mansour doesn't simply reference Moroccan design. The entire experience is built around Moroccan art de vivre.

Why I'd build a trip around it: Because your hotel becomes part of experiencing Marrakech rather than an escape from it.

12. Raffles Singapore | Singapore

You don't check into Raffles simply because you need somewhere to sleep in Singapore.

You check in because it's Raffles.

Opened in 1887, the grande dame has hosted writers, celebrities and royalty and remains one of the world's most recognizable historic hotels. Its white façade, tropical courtyards and legendary Long Bar are woven into the story of Singapore itself.

And yes, this is where you order a Singapore Sling.

Sometimes the bucket-list experience isn't about finding the newest hotel. It's about staying somewhere that has been part of the destination for generations.

Why I'd build a trip around it: For the pleasure of sleeping inside a little piece of travel history.

13. Burj Al Arab | Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai reinvents itself at such speed that today's headline-making hotel can quickly be replaced by tomorrow's.

And yet, decades after opening, you still know exactly what the Burj Al Arab looks like.

Its sail-shaped silhouette became an international symbol of Dubai's ambition and its particular brand of unapologetic luxury. There are newer hotels, cooler hotels and perhaps even more extravagant hotels now.

But iconic? The Burj still owns that title.

Why I'd build a trip around it: Because this is the hotel that helped define the modern image of Dubai.

14. Aman Venice | Venice, Italy

Venice is already theatrical. Then you arrive at your hotel by boat and step into a 16th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal.

Aman Venice is housed inside Palazzo Papadopoli, complete with soaring ceilings, frescoes, grand staircases and private gardens that feel almost impossible in the middle of Venice.

It's intimate, extravagant and very Aman, but the real luxury is the building and location.

Why I'd build a trip around it: Because if you're going to live in a Venetian palace, even briefly, this is how you do it.

15. Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne | Switzerland

High above Lake Lucerne sits a resort with a history stretching back more than a century and a view that does most of the talking.

Bürgenstock is practically a destination of its own, with multiple hotels, restaurants and an enormous Alpine Spa overlooking the lake and surrounding mountains.

The outdoor infinity pool alone has become one of Switzerland's great hotel images.

This is somewhere I'd deliberately leave room in the itinerary to do very little.

Why I'd build a trip around it: For the combination of Alpine scenery, wellness and that ridiculous pool.

16. Arctic TreeHouse Hotel | Finnish Lapland

There are plenty of places selling the dream of sleeping under the northern lights. I want the dream without sacrificing the hotel.

Arctic TreeHouse Hotel in Finnish Lapland pairs cozy Scandinavian design with enormous north-facing windows, meaning you can potentially watch the aurora from bed.

And when you're not staring at the sky, you're in Lapland. Think reindeer, huskies, snowy forests, saunas and that particular blue winter light that makes the entire place feel otherworldly.

Why I'd build a trip around it: Because seeing the northern lights from bed is a bucket-list moment that requires very little explanation.

17. Amangiri | Utah, USA

Amangiri doesn't look as though it was built in the Utah desert so much as uncovered from it.

The architecture almost disappears into the surrounding rock formations and enormous desert landscape, creating one of America's most recognizable luxury hotels.

This is a stay built around stillness, space and landscape, whether you're hiking, exploring by air, heading onto Lake Powell or simply sitting beside that famous pool wrapped around a natural rock escarpment.

Why I'd build a trip around it: For proof that one of the world's great escape-from-everything hotels is right here in the United States.

18. The Oberoi Udaivilas | Udaipur, India

If you've ever wanted to arrive at a palace by boat, Udaipur is calling.

Set on the banks of Lake Pichola, The Oberoi Udaivilas unfolds through domes, courtyards, fountains, gardens and pools, with views toward Udaipur and the City Palace across the water.

It's grand without losing the sense of romance that makes Udaipur one of India's most captivating cities.

This is exactly the kind of hotel where I'd resist the temptation to over-plan. Give yourself time to actually be there.

Why I'd build a trip around it: For the full Rajasthan palace fantasy, starting with the arrival. India is chock full of these epic former palaces so use this as your starting point, then palace hop around the country.

19. Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle | Thailand

Getting here involves a boat. That's usually a promising start.

Hidden among bamboo jungle in northern Thailand's Golden Triangle, this Four Seasons camp trades the traditional resort experience for luxurious tented accommodations and days centered around the landscape and culture of the region.

It feels adventurous without requiring you to rough it, which is a combination I happen to appreciate very much.

Why I'd build a trip around it: Because the hotel gives you a reason to venture far beyond Thailand's usual Bangkok-and-beach itinerary. But do stay in Bangkok at the Capella anyway.

20. Hotel das Cataratas, A Belmond Hotel | Iguaçu Falls, Brazil

There may be no better example of a hotel whose location changes the entire trip.

Hotel das Cataratas sits inside Brazil's Iguaçu National Park, just steps from one of the world's great natural wonders.

Staying inside the park gives you something particularly valuable: time. Instead of simply arriving with everyone else to see the falls, you get to experience this extraordinary landscape as the crowds disappear and the park takes on a completely different atmosphere.

The pink Portuguese-colonial-style hotel isn't exactly hard on the eyes, either.

Why I'd build a trip around it: Because when you're traveling halfway around the world to see one of nature's masterpieces, this is where you want to wake up. And Belmond always deliver on an extraordinary stay whether that’s on land, train or luxury barge.

What Makes a Hotel Worth Traveling For?

Looking at this list, what's interesting is how little these hotels actually have in common.

Some are tents. Some are palaces. One has a waterslide. Another sits on a dune in Namibia. Some have been welcoming travelers for more than a century, while others represent an entirely new idea of luxury.

But they all offer something I look for when planning a memorable trip: a reason to be there.

That's also why I don't believe every vacation should begin with a destination.

Sometimes it begins with a hotel.

You see a picture of a pool suspended above Lake Lucerne. You decide you want to ride a horse into the Indian Ocean in Sumba. You've always dreamed about Rajasthan. Or maybe you simply want to disappear onto an island in Mozambique where almost nobody can find you.

Start there.

Then build the trip around it.
