Budapest: Why This Danube City Deserves at Least Three Nights

It’s easy to compare Budapest to Vienna, both are grand, elegant, and steeped in history. But for me, Budapest has an edge: it’s just as walkable, even more affordable, and brimming with character.

On this trip, the city was our finale for AmaWaterways’ Gems of Eastern Europe river cruise. But Budapest isn’t a “just for the day” city. It’s worth slowing down for at least three nights (or more), especially if you’re building it into a longer Europe itinerary.

Why Budapest Belongs on Your List

  • Grand, Walkable, and Affordable — From the sweeping views at Fisherman’s Bastion to thermal baths and ruin bars, the city’s mix of old-world charm and modern vibrancy is unmatched and far more budget-friendly than Vienna. Don’t get me wrong. Vienna is fabulous and you can have best of both on many Danube river cruise itineraries.

  • Easy Access from Philly — Starting next summer, American Airlines will offer a nonstop flight from Philadelphia to Budapest, making it easier than ever to get here.

  • Perfect for a Post-Cruise Stay — Many Danube river cruises either start or end in Budapest. Extending your trip lets you see beyond the “checklist” stops.

Where We Stayed & Explored

This time, we stayed near Central Market Hall, a colorful hub for local foods, paprika stalls, and Hungarian treats. We love to shop there, and this time was no different. It’s a short walk across the bridge to the Buda side, where you’ll find castle views, cobblestone streets, and quieter corners of the city.

One of our favorite discoveries? A wine bar Palack Borbar 10 minutes from our hotel, perfect for sipping local vintages while people-watching after a day of exploring. We found it last time when we stayed at Hotel Clark, overlooking the Chain Bridge.

Tips for River Cruisers

If you’re planning a Danube cruise, make sure Budapest is on the itinerary. There’s nothing like sailing into the city, watching the Parliament building glow golden at night from the water. And if your cruise starts here, consider arriving early, three nights will give you time to truly enjoy the city without rushing.

Budapest is one of Europe’s most rewarding capitals: grand like Vienna, but warmer in personality and lighter on your wallet. Whether you visit as part of a Danube river cruise or on a dedicated trip, give yourself time here, you’ll thank me later.
