Hotel Check-In: Nobu Hotel Marrakech

There are hotels you tour, and there are hotels you actually get to know.

After four nights at Nobu Hotel Marrakech, I definitely got to know this one. And after exploring Marrakech from morning until night, I came to appreciate something about Nobu that I hadn't necessarily thought about before arriving: the location makes Marrakech incredibly easy.

You're just outside the Medina, close enough to walk in when you want the souks, shopping and beautiful chaos of the old city, but far enough away that you can retreat to a calm, full-service hotel when you're ready for a break.

For a first trip to Marrakech, I loved that balance.

The Location

Nobu Hotel Marrakech sits in the Hivernage district, just outside the Medina.

That turned out to be one of my favorite things about staying here.

After an international flight, you can simply be driven directly to the hotel, unload your luggage and check in. You aren't navigating narrow Medina streets or figuring out how to get your bags to a riad.

And every day, we could decide exactly how much Marrakech we wanted.

We could head into the Medina to shop and explore, go out for dinner, visit other hotels or venture elsewhere around the city, then come back to Nobu and decompress.

It's particularly appealing for first-time Marrakech visitors, families and travelers who simply want a little more ease built into their trip.

The Hotel

If you're familiar with Nobu hotels elsewhere in the world, Marrakech feels recognizably Nobu, but with a Moroccan sense of place.

The interiors blend the brand's contemporary aesthetic with local influences, and the overall feeling is polished and social without being overwhelming.

It also doesn't feel enormous, which I appreciated. You have the amenities of a full-service luxury hotel without feeling like you're staying in a sprawling resort.

And then there's the rooftop.

The Rooftop Has Two Personalities

During the day, the rooftop is one of Nobu Marrakech's biggest selling points.

There's the pool, views across Marrakech and somewhere to retreat after a morning spent exploring the Medina. Come back, swim, have a drink and regroup before deciding what you want to do that evening.

But don't write it off once the sun goes down.

At night, the rooftop becomes an entirely different scene, with music, a DJ, entertainment, hookah and a genuinely fun atmosphere.

I loved that you could have both experiences without leaving the hotel. Spend the day exploring Marrakech, come back and decompress by the pool, change for dinner, and later head upstairs when you want a little nightlife.

You don't necessarily have to commit to going out-out to have a night out.

And that, to me, is another reason Nobu works particularly well for friends, couples and travelers who want their hotel to be part of the trip rather than simply somewhere they sleep.

My Advice: Book the Hammam When You First Arrive

If you're wondering when to book a traditional hammam in Marrakech, my vote is: right after you land.

After an international flight, there may be no better feeling than getting properly scrubbed down at the hammam. And I mean scrubbed.

You emerge feeling incredibly fresh, clean and reset, which is a pretty perfect way to start a trip.

Rather than saving the spa for the end of the stay, I'd actually build this into your arrival day. Check in, unpack, hammam, shower, and suddenly you've washed the flight off and you're ready for Marrakech.

It's also a good reminder not to schedule every minute of a trip here. Marrakech is stimulating. Give yourself some time to enjoy the hotel, too.

Sushi on Arrival? Trust Me.

And then there's Nobu.

Normally, I'm the person telling you to eat the local food when you arrive somewhere new. But after flying internationally, sometimes a big dinner is the absolute last thing you want.

Really good, light sushi? Perfect.

Having Nobu lunch on the rooftop was such a treat, particularly when we first arrived. We could have something fresh and light without leaving the hotel or making another plan after a long travel day.

There will be plenty of time for tagines, Moroccan breakfasts, mint tea and everything else you're going to eat your way through in Marrakech.

On night one? Give me the sushi.

What Really Stood Out: The People

Four nights is long enough to start having your people at a hotel, and we definitely had ours at Nobu Marrakech.

Adnan became our morning buddy at breakfast, greeting us each day and starting our mornings off right, while the concierge team seemed to take turns looking after us throughout the stay. Whether we needed help with plans, reservations, transportation or simply figuring out what we wanted to do next, there was always someone ready to help.

And they were just lovely.

That's one of those things that's difficult to capture on a hotel website. Beautiful rooms and rooftop pools photograph well. Having people remember you, check in on you and genuinely make you feel looked after is something you only discover by actually staying there.

It's also why the relationships behind the hotels I recommend matter to me.

After four nights at Nobu, I felt very comfortable knowing there was a team on the ground I could reach out to and trust with my travelers.

That relationship matters to me just as much as the hotel itself.

And Can We Talk About the Bedding?

This may sound like a small detail, but I am still thinking about the pillows.

The bedding at Nobu Marrakech was so comfortable, with those incredibly soft, plush, sink-into-them pillows that make you wonder why your bed at home isn't this good.

In fact, I came home wanting to know exactly what pillows they use so I could recreate the situation in my own bedroom.

And after a long flight or a full day walking, shopping and exploring Marrakech, climbing into a genuinely great hotel bed matters.

Consider this my official request for every luxury hotel to take its pillows this seriously.

The Hotel Is Only Part of a Morocco Trip

This is also where working with a travel advisor who has relationships on the ground becomes especially valuable.

While we relied on Nobu's concierge team throughout our stay, I also worked with my contacts at Experience Morocco, a destination management company I was connected with through my friends at Index Select.

That combination worked beautifully.

A great hotel concierge can take care of plenty within Marrakech, but Morocco is a destination where you really shouldn't feel limited to what's within the city limits.

Marrakech can be the jumping-off point for so much more. You can head into the Atlas Mountains, spend a night in the desert, add the coast or build a much larger journey through Morocco.

That's where having trusted people on the ground becomes especially valuable. Transfers, guides, day trips and more complicated multi-stop itineraries are simply easier when you have the right local team behind them.

It's also why I came home feeling like we'd barely scratched the surface.

Who I'd Book at Nobu Marrakech

I think Nobu works particularly well for first-time Marrakech visitors who want to experience the Medina without necessarily sleeping inside it.

I'd also consider it for couples, friends traveling together, families and travelers who appreciate contemporary hotels and want a strong pool, spa, dining and social component built into their stay.

And it's an especially good option for someone who looks at a traditional riad and thinks, Beautiful, but I'm not sure I want to navigate that every day.

You can still spend hours wandering the Medina. You can shop until you need another suitcase. You can eat Moroccan food, visit gardens, drink mint tea and disappear into the souks.

Then you can come back, take the elevator upstairs and jump in the pool.

There is something to be said for that.

If I Were Planning Your First Night at Nobu Marrakech...

Honestly, I'd make it very easy.

Arrive. Check in. Hammam. Sushi. Rooftop. Bed.

Then wake up the next morning, say hello to Adnan at breakfast, and tackle the Medina feeling like an actual human being.

That's a pretty excellent introduction to Marrakech.

Stay here if: You want a stylish, contemporary Marrakech hotel with easy access to the Medina, a great rooftop and all the conveniences of a full-service luxury property.

Especially good for: First-time visitors, couples, friends, families and travelers who want Marrakech without being immersed in the Medina around the clock.

Don't miss: The hammam, the rooftop pool by day and the rooftop scene at night, sushi at Nobu and a proper breakfast before heading into the city.

How long: I stayed four nights, and Marrakech still left me feeling like we'd barely scratched the surface. The value at his hotel is really solid for the nightly rates, compared to the more expensive and chic neighbors La Mamounia and Royal Mansour.
